It has been a long time since my last newsletter to you all, but there really has not been all that much to report since we have not progressed very far since. However I have been compelled to send a report to you all since we have to nominate a new delegate to represent us at the Runanga o Ngāti Awa. Up to now, our delegate has been Sonny Mansell who has also chaired our meetings, doing a creditable job of both. He has now indicated that he is unable to continue due to personal and health issues.
Up to the end of July 2010, our membership stands at 546, 419 being adults over the age of 18 years of age the rest from that age down to the babies. Sadly, only a handful of us locally are left with the responsibility of attending to all hapu matters which does not help when it comes to money raising. Should any of you out there who may have good ideas of how to help us back here, we would welcome your input.
…Earlier this year we became involved with the Community Max programme enabling unemployed workers to clear our marae site at Tokitareke. That was wrapped up at the end of May combined with a very successful Wānanga. We have Kemi Riritahi and Cheryl Savage to thank for the organisation of this project.
…Several of our younger members received education grants from Te Runanga o Ngāti Awa. Remember those of you who are members, your children and mokopuna are eligible to apply for these tertiary education grants which are open for application in January.
…Since our last report, we have lost many of our kaumatua who have passed on into the hands of our lord - namely Rauotehuia Cameron, June Cribb, Teri Hiraka, Rangimawhiti Koopu, Hemi Mei, Milly Thompson, Te Uruti Rangitakatu, Hare Reneti, Mary Ngatai & Ted Tawhara, Nete Tutauaha, joined by younger members Eric Rangiheuea, Pomare Pakeha, Carl Midwood, Hirau West. There could possibly be others that I do not know of and would welcome information of.
…We have a member, JJ.Tangira staying in our caretaker cottage on the marae site. He has recently lost his partner Olive Oketopa (Apihai).
…This year, along with other hapu, we received $10,000 grant from Te Runanga o Ngāti Awa which has helped bolster our finances which to date stands at approximately $72,000.
…A very generous member also donated a substantial sum, for this we are eternally grateful.
Anyway, I would like us to consider holding a hapu whakakotahitanga with a Wānanga over the School holidays through January to February. Please think about it and send me some ideas. Those of you registered on Warahoe hapu, I welcome you. I would love to put a face to a name, so maybe we should join up on Facebook.???
Meantime, we have a new delegate to the Runanga to consider, closing date for nominations being 24th August, so we must have a hui before that date. Naturally for those of you who live out of the area, it would not be convenient to attend a hui back here. From past experience our locals prefer after work meetings so here are two days to consider. 6p.m. either Wednesday 18th or Thursday 19th here at Otumahi. Let me know which suits most of you. Okay?
For now, much aroha to you all.
